About Author

Shahbano Alvi is the founder and publisher of Ushba, an independent publishing house that has been publishing Academic, Educational and General books since 2001. In addition to her role in publishing, she is also an accomplished writer, penning short stories in both English and Urdu. In 2001, she compiled ten books of childrens poetry. Her stories in English and Urdu have been published in various prestigious literary journals such as Kitaab.org, Adb-e-Lateef, and Ravi (the Government College Universitys literary journal). Her first collection of English short stories A Woman and the Afternoon Sun was published in 2021. Furthermore, she co-edited the book House of Treasures: Perspectives on Urdu Literature, published in 2022. Her collection of Urdu short stories, Aaj Seh Hoja Razi, and her second collection of English short stories A New Pigeon on the Block is scheduled for release in 2024. Tumhara Dil Samajh ley ga is her first collection of Urdu poems. Shahbano has also demonstrated her translation skills, rendering works from Urdu to English and vice versa. Notably, she has ventured into filmmaking as a writer and director, completing her first film, Mera Dost Ayaz, in July 2023. This film was selected for screening at the Gandhara International Film Festival, allowing it to reach a global audience. Beyond her literary and cinematic pursuits, Shahbano is a talented printmaker and photographer. Her woodcuts and pastel portraits have been showcased both nationally and internationally. In 1991, she played a pivotal role in establishing the design department of OUP Pakistan. Later, she worked as a designer for Educational Trade Books on a contract basis for Oxford University Press, Oxford, UK, in 1999. She contributed to the design of the text formats for the millennium editions of the Oxford Childrens Dictionaries, Oxford School Dictionary, and Oxford Study Dictionary.
